US President Donald Trump has made the Department of Government Efficiency (DOJ) led by Elon Musk more powerful. On Tuesday, Trump signed an executive order giving Dodge additional powers.
Musk, a close associate of Trump and head of Dodge, unexpectedly appeared at the White House of the US President on Tuesday. Musk, who attended the Oval Office of the White House, stood next to President Trump.
In response to the questions asked by journalists, he claimed that he did not lead the American government. Musk, who has taken charge of Dodge with the responsibility of reducing the spending of the US federal government, has been taking various controversial decisions .
The new executive order directs the heads of government agencies to follow the Dodge decision . But the leaders of the opposition Democratic Party have criticized the formation and working style of Dodge. They have also raised questions about Dodge's transparency .
But Musk, standing next to Trump in the Oval Office, said that he is working according to the wishes of the American people. "The people voted for big government reform and the people will get it," he said. "That's what democracy is all about."
Billionaire technology entrepreneur Musk is not elected himself. Appointed under the president's watch, he described the federal employees as an 'unelected, fourth, unconstitutional branch of government'. However, Musk says they have more power than any elected representative.
Tesla, X and SpaceX owner Musk wore a black 'Make America Great Again hat' . After the journalists asked questions criticizing his working style, he joked. During the press conference, he even held his son 'X' in his arms for a while.
"Reducing federal spending is imperative for us," he said. Musk was also asked about the recent false claim that the US government had sent millions of dollars worth of condoms to Gaza. 'Some of the things I said would be wrong and should be corrected,' Musk replied .
Questions have been raised not only about Dodge's working style, but also about its budget and legal status. It has also challenged the constitutional right of Parliament to decide where and how to use the budget. Musk has not mentioned anything about the legal right to close federal agencies without parliamentary approval.
Trump has made Musk the head of Dodge with the start of his second term. Dodge was established by executive order on the day Trump entered the White House, with the primary responsibility of cutting government spending. Within three weeks of its inception, Dodge placed hundreds of federal officials on leave. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has been shut down, along with access to sensitive federal payment systems within the Treasury Department.
The court in New York has issued an interim order against the case filed after accessing sensitive information including social security, Medicare customer payments, bank accounts of millions of Americans within the Ministry of Finance. In addition to that, the court has also instructed to destroy all the data downloaded from the system of the Ministry of Finance.
Similarly, Dodge imposed a cap on federal agencies' fees and shut down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that USAID will be heavily reduced in manpower and will remain under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After Trump and Musk agreed, 2700 USAID employees were placed on furlough.
Similarly, Dodge set a deadline for two million employees of the federal government to take leave with 8 months' salary. But the court has issued an interim order against both these decisions.
Along with USAID and the Treasury Department, the Department of Education, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have been targeted by Musk. President Trump has said that Musk is "doing a very good job". Trump says that Musk is spending too much time without taking anything.
