US President Donald Trump has imposed new import duties on goods imported into his country from Canada, Mexico and China. According to the US President's Office White House, the same 25 percent import duty has been imposed for Mexico and Canada and 10 percent for China.
But President Trump said that oil produced in Canada will bear lower import duties and it will be implemented only from February 18. China, Canada and Mexico are the main trading partners of the United States. These three accounted for 40 percent of the country's imports to the US last year. Canada and Mexico have already warned that they will respond to US import tariffs .
Trump has been saying that he plans to impose import duties for the European Union (EU) in the future. A group of European countries said they had to impose import duties because they did not treat the US well, the BBC reported.
White House Press Secretary Carolina Levitt says that such customs duty to be paid by Canada and Mexico is the answer to the fentanyl drug illegally imported from those countries . It is said that tens of millions of people died in America due to this medicine.
During the election campaign, Trump warned of up to 60 percent import tariffs on Chinese products. But on the first day of his new tenure, he did not take any decision about it. Trump ordered his administration to study the matter upon assuming the presidency.
Since 2018, the data shows that imports from China have decreased in America.
