Donald Trump, who was elected in the elections held in the United States on November 5, was sworn in as the 47th president on Monday. He was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts in a special ceremony held in the Rotunda building of the US Capitol Hill in the capital, Washington DC.

Trump was previously the President of the United States from 2017 to 2021. 

JD Vance was sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the United States along with Trump at a ceremony held at 10:45 PM Nepali time. Vance was sworn in by Judge Brett Cavanaugh. Normally the swearing-in ceremony is held outside on Capitol Hill, but this time it was held inside the building due to extreme cold. Previously, in 1985, Ronald Reagan's swearing-in ceremony was also held inside Capitol Hill. 

After the swearing-in, Trump said America needed to "restore confidence". Stating that "America's golden age has begun", he claimed that "America will prosper and be respected" under his leadership. "I am confident and optimistic that we are at the beginning of an exciting new era of national success, a wave of change sweeping the country," Trump said. He welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and claimed to be a peacemaker. Trump's swearing-in ceremony was attended by former presidents, leaders and influential billionaires including Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. 

About 200,000 supporters flocked to Washington for the swearing-in ceremony. American Idol winner and singer Carrie Underwood performed the song 'America the Beautiful' at the ceremony. American disco group 'The Village People' has also announced to perform at the event. During the campaign, Trump played the group's YMCA and Macho Man songs at his rallies. According to American media, Trump's longtime friend and colleague singer Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio also performed. 

Trump and Vance have both issued 200 executive orders, including immigration, after taking the oath of office and secrecy. Those orders include immigration and borders, trade and economy, climate and energy, confidentiality of documents, foreign policy, abortion, tick-tock and other issues, according to the BBC. 

Trump says that the historic executive orders he issued will start a complete restoration and revolution of America. "My message to Americans today is that the time has come for us to once again act with the courage, vigor and vitality of the greatest civilization in history," Trump said. 

As part of his immigration and border policy, Trump has promised to "launch the largest deportation program in American history." According to Fox News, he is expected to declare a national border emergency and order the military to help secure the southern border.

Trump harshly criticized the Biden administration for failing to address the immigration crisis in his speech. "The previous administration provided safe haven and protection to dangerous criminals who entered our country illegally," Trump said. 

Also, he said he would end a long-standing policy barring federal immigration officials from raiding churches and schools. However, it is said that implementing such collective deportation programs will cost billions of dollars and face legal challenges.

Trump has announced that he will strictly implement the 'stay in Mexico' policy. For that, he is going to declare a 'national emergency' on the US-Mexico border and declare drug dealers as terrorists. During his first term, Trump turned back 70,000 non-Mexican refugees who entered the US from the Mexican border. His plan to build a wall on the Mexican border has been in the works since 2017. In his first term, he signed an executive order to build a border wall. Although some parts of the wall have been constructed, there is still a lot of work to be done. During this term, he will try to complete those walls. 

Likewise, he said that he would abolish the 150-year-old constitutional right to be an American citizen based on being born on American soil, saying it was "ridiculous". But because the right to birthright citizenship is clearly guaranteed by the US Constitution, it is unlikely that it will be removed just because the executive order was issued. 

Trump, who has said that he prefers American products, is going to impose extensive tariffs on imported goods. Joe Biden continued some of the tariffs that Trump imposed against China during his first term.

This time he will impose a 10 percent tax on all imports and 25 percent on Canadian and Mexican goods. He is said to have signed an executive order imposing up to 60 percent tariffs on goods imported from China. However, experts say that such taxes will make consumer goods more expensive in the US and increase inflation. 

Even though he announced the increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, he invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to the swearing-in ceremony. However, President Xi has sent Vice President Khan Jung to Washington to attend the ceremony as a special representative. In addition, Trump has said that he is willing to visit China. 

Trump has repealed climate policies implemented by the Joe Biden administration. Outgoing President Biden touted boosting green jobs, regulating pollution and infrastructure as his biggest achievements. Trump is going to increase American energy production. 

Similarly, Trump's policy is to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement. Within six months of taking office as president in 2017, he decided to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. Biden decided to rejoin the agreement after becoming president in 2021. 

Trump has pardoned hundreds of people convicted of the January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riots. More than 1500 people involved in the incident were arrested. At least 600 of them were charged with assaulting or obstructing federal officials. Trump is set to release classified documents related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the 1968 assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.  Trump has prioritized foreign policy as well. Earlier, he said that he will end the Russia-Ukraine war on the first day. However, later he said that it may take 6 months to end the war. It is not clear what to do about it. 

Trump also reportedly issued an executive order to reverse Biden's recent decision to remove Cuba from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. He may also reinstate sanctions against Venezuela. These two countries were targeted by Trump in the previous administration as well.

Trump has suspended legislation to ban Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok. His order gave him time to find an American partner to buy a 50 percent stake in the company. Trump, who was previously in favor of banning TikTok, was attracted to video platforms by saying that his videos were watched by billions in the last election. 

According to the 2020 US Census, it is estimated that there are 185,000 to 215,000 Nepali migrants in the US. According to a study conducted by the Center for All-round Development Studies (IIDS), 34.7 percent of Nepali expatriates in the US are employed in the technology sector. 

It seems that the Nepali people in America will also be affected by the immigration and other issues put forward by Trump. In particular, those who arrived in the US as students and are preparing for permanent residence, those who are staying in the US on a visa such as a visit, and those who came to the US illegally are sure to be affected. Fear and uncertainty are spreading among students and skilled workers in the US. More than 1.1 million international students are studying in the US under the academic session 2023/024. 

International students usually have a nonimmigrant visa. While such a visa would allow them to study in the US, it would not provide them with a legal way to stay in the country. This means that most of the students who came to America after spending a lot of money may have to return after completing their studies. 

Likewise, the United States allows immigration to about 85,000 people every year through the "H-1B" visa. He said Trump banned H-1B visas during his first term.

Trump is pushing big tech companies to scrap their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies that employ a diverse, highly skilled workforce. Major companies including Meta, Walmart and Amazon have already canceled this policy. 

However, there is no possibility that there will be any significant difference in Nepal-US relations during his tenure. However, some policies authorized by the Trump administration may have an indirect effect on Nepal. It will include areas such as climate change and health. 

In addition to that, there is a possibility that the US assistance to Nepal under various headings will also be cut. In the last five years, America has provided more than one billion rupees in aid to Nepal. Similarly, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced in July 2024 that it will provide assistance equal to about 659 million US dollars (about 92 billion rupees) over a period of five years.

Trump has promoted "America First" as the main slogan of foreign policy. In this sense, it seems that his foreign policy in Asia will focus on Nepal's two neighbors, India and China. In his first term, Trump announced the 'Indo-Pacific' strategy with the aim of maintaining US influence in the Indo-Pacific region and reducing China's influence. 

Executive orders are written orders issued by the president to the federal government. Such orders issued by the President for policy changes do not require Parliament's approval. However, such executive orders must remain within the law and may be subject to legal review.

In his first term, Trump signed 220 executive orders. Some of them faced court challenges. However, it seems that almost all the orders made by Trump will be implemented when the Republican Party has a majority in both houses of the Parliament. On top of that, since Trump is in control, he does not seem to face any challenge even from within the ruling Republican Party. 

Outgoing President Joe Biden issued 160 executive orders. Barack Obama and George Bush, who became presidents for two consecutive terms, issued 277 and 291 executive orders, respectively. 

Trump won the presidency on behalf of the Republican Party in the November 5 election. He defeated Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party. Trump won with 314 electoral votes. At least 270 electoral votes out of 538 total votes are required to be elected as the President of the United States. Harris received 226 electoral votes.
