The death toll from the petrol tanker explosion in Nigeria has increased to 86. Officials said that a tanker carrying 60,000 liters of petrol overturned on the road in the middle of the country on Saturday.

Niger State Emergency Management Agency spokesman Ibrahim Audu Husseini said, "The final death toll from the tanker explosion has reached 86."

'We buried 86 burnt bodies from 12 pm yesterday to 2 pm today. It took us 14 hours to bury the bodies because we couldn't get diggers and had to call locals to dig the mass graves manually. Another 52 people suffered serious burns from the explosion.'

The explosion occurred at Dikko Junction on the road connecting the federal capital to Kaduna. In 2023, President Bola Tinubu ended fuel subsidies, which increased food and transport costs.

'The president expressed deep sorrow over the fuel tanker explosion. In addition, he ordered a national campaign to raise public awareness about the serious risks and environmental hazards of fuel. In October, more than 170 people died in a similar accident in Jigawa state in northern Nigeria.

In 2020, the Federal Road Safety Corps listed 1,531 fuel tanker accidents, which claimed more than 535 lives.
