Two leading fundamentalist judges of Iran's Supreme Court were shot dead on Saturday. Those killed are Mohammad Mogiseh and Hojatoleslam Ali Razini.
Both judges were involved in the case of mass execution of political prisoners in 1998. Iranian state media Irna reported that the assailant committed suicide after shooting the judges. This is a rare attack on senior Iranian officials.
According to IRGC-affiliated Fars News, the attacker used a handgun. A judge's bodyguard was injured in the attack. The attacker is said to be an employee of the Iranian Supreme Court. However, the Judicial Media Center reported that the attacker entered the court premises from outside. But the Iranian Supreme Court is heavily guarded.
'Preliminary investigation does not show that the attacker has a case in the Supreme Court . "Neither was he a client of any branch of the court," Mizan news agency of the Judiciary said.
Iran's judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir told Iranian state television that the shooter had 'infiltrated' the judiciary. According to him, the attacker worked in the court where the judge was murdered.
Several branches of the Iranian Supreme Court are spread across the country. It appeals the decision made by the lower court . Rajini has been targeted before. He was injured in January 1999 when motorcycle-borne assailants hurled explosives at the vehicle.
In August 2005, Masoud Mokadsi was shot dead in Tehran. At that time he was looking at the case of an influential journalist .
