Why is there a political crisis in Germany?

Germany is a country known for its political stability for a long time. Before 2005, the power in Germany was mostly held by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). But two decades ago, when CDU leader Angela Merkel became chancellor, she ruled Germany for 16 years.

After 2021, Olaf Scholz emerged as the chancellor of Germany. In the federal election, Scholz of the SPD became chancellor, defeating the main rival CDU candidate. After that, his party, the SPD, became the largest party in Germany. Scholz previously served as Germany's finance minister and vice chancellor.

Scholz has been leading the coalition government since 2021 . The government was a coalition of the Free Democratic Party (FPD), the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Green parties. But a few weeks ago  Germany is going through political instability.

German President Frank Walter Steinmeier dissolved the parliament last Friday. He announced the mid-term elections for February 23. Elections are going to be held in Germany 7 months ahead of schedule . After the coalition led by Chancellor Scholz lost the majority, President Steinmeier took steps to dissolve the parliament.

Scholz was leading a three-party coalition government . It was not easy for Scholz from the beginning to form a coalition government of the three parties FPD, SDP and Greens with different ideologies . The alliance was facing various challenges from the beginning.

Germany's economic renaissance and government spending could not be agreed upon in the coalition government . FPD had been stressing on matters such as cutting down on government expenditure and commercial freedom. But the SDP and the Greens have been demanding more spending on social services and environmental policies.

After the conflict between the three parties participating in the government, the coalition government led by Scholz collapsed. Meanwhile, last November, Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired his government's finance minister and FDP MP Christian Lindner. With Lindner's dismissal, his party, the FDP, withdrew its support for the government. Because of this, the Scholz-led government fell into a minority. With this development, Germany is on the way to mid-term elections.

Scholz said that he was fired from his post because Finance Minister Lindner obstructed the passage of the law brought for the budget and the bogus case . The international media also said that this incident, which happened a few hours after Donald Trump won the US presidential election, created a situation for mid-term elections in Germany.

Last December 16, Chancellor Scholz did not receive a vote of confidence in the Bundestag (Parliament of Germany). In Germany, the 733-seat lower house needs the support of 367 MPs to win a vote of confidence. But Scholz received only 282 votes.

President Frank Walter Steinmeier dissolved parliament on December 27 after the chancellor lost a vote of confidence. Along with this, a new election will be held on February 23, 2025. This political crisis, which started due to budget policy and legal disputes, has brought instability to Germany.

President Steinmeier has said that the election decision is appropriate in a challenging situation. He believes that elections are necessary for political stability in Germany. "A competent and effective government and a reliable majority in the parliament are necessary for stability in a difficult situation like the present." Therefore, mid-term elections in Germany are the right way," he said in Berlin after the dissolution of parliament.

After the election, the solution of Germany's problems should be the main priority of everyone, the president says. Also, he emphasized on making the election campaign fair and transparent.

Socialist leader Scholz will lead the provisional government until a new government is formed. A minority government cannot pass laws. Similarly, there are difficulties in policy implementation. According to political analysts, it can affect Germany's internal and external affairs.

The president is usually limited to a formal role . But the latest intervention of the President is predicted to cause a political crisis. Likewise, analysts say that Germany's political instability may affect relations with the European Union and other international partners. In particular, the role of Germany in the policy making of the European Union is also important . That's why this instability can affect Europe as a whole .

Although the financial issue appears on the surface, there are other reasons behind the dissolution of the parliament, according to the BBC. Scholz's party and its coalition partner, the Greens, wanted to push through rules such as loosening debt financing rules to aid Ukraine and increase spending on infrastructure projects, which were blocked by Finance Minister Christian Linder . Because of this, Linder was fired .

Earlier in 2005 mid-term elections were held in Germany . He was defeated by Angela Merkel in the election conducted by the then chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
