179 people died in a plane crash at South Korea's Muan International Airport on Sunday.
The plane of Jeju Air returning from Bangkok, Thailand carrying 181 people, crashed at 9:07 local time on Sunday morning while landing at the Muan International Airport located in the southwest. Two crew members were rescued alive from the crashed plane. Korean news agency Yonhap reported that they are being treated at a local hospital.
There were 173 passengers and 6 crew members, including 173 South Koreans and 2 Thai nationals, on the plane. In a footage broadcast by local television, plumes of black smoke can be seen coming from the Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Another footage shows smoke and flames coming out of the plane's right wing engine before landing.
Fire officials have speculated that the plane may have crashed due to a bird strike. After the first landing attempt, the aircraft returned to the sky due to a suspected malfunction of the landing gear and the second landing attempt was made with a 'belly-landing'. The Ministry of Transport said that it may take time to find out the real cause of the accident.
