Ajay Edwards is basically a social activist. When he launched a new party called 'Hamro Party' in Darjeeling on 25 November 2021, he made a leap from a social activist to politics.
Within a short period of time, the new party won the hearts of the voters of Darjeeling. The emerging party captured 6 out of 45 seats in Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and 11 out of 32 seats in Darjeeling Municipality.
Edwards, the founder of our party, dissolved the old party on Sunday and created another new force called 'Indian Gorkha Janshakti Front'. He is also the coordinator of the new party.
Edwards is considered a pro-Gorkhaland leader. He has made the issue of forming a separate state of Gorkhaland, which was almost abandoned by all previous regional parties, his main weapon. 'I have always made Gorkhaland the primary agenda,' he said to the media after announcing the new party flag in Darjeeling, 'I will be firm in favor of building a separate state including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Terai and Duwars.' is marked with an asterisk . He claims that Gorkhaland should be formed to protect the historical background, identity and political rights of the Nepali-speaking Gorkha community. Edwards is joined by NB Khawas, Prakash Gurung, Pradeep Pradhan, Yogendra Rai, Goulan Lepcha, Mahendra Chhetri and other young politicians of the latest generation.
After the 104-day long protest of 2017, the change of power started in Darjeeling . The leader of that movement, including Bimal Gurung, the president of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, many leaders went underground. After Gurung's underground life, Vinay Tamang and Anit Thapa emerged in the politics of Darjeeling. Both the leaders are working in Darjeeling especially as per the wish of the West Bengal government. Thapa is the head of GTA . He is considered close to Mamata Banerjee .
There are more than half a dozen regional parties in Darjeeling. They are considered to be close to any state government or central government. It is understood that the new party of Edwards has come according to the plan to stay separate from both governments and focus only on the issue of Gorkhaland.
"Gorkhaland is not anyone's private property, it is the right of one and a half million Gorkhas of India," Edwards said, "We need freedom from the clutches of Bengal." He also said that he is ready to sacrifice his life for Gorkhaland.
