South Korea's Constitutional Court has started the impeachment trial against President Eun Suk Yeol. On Saturday, the Korean Parliament has passed a motion of impeachment against the former President Yoon, accused of declaring military rule and plunging the country into political turmoil.

With the passage of the impeachment motion by the parliament, the 9-member court will decide on the removal or reinstatement of the suspended Yun. The court now has 6 months left for that . If the position is vacant, there is a provision that an election should be held within 60 days to elect a new president. Until then, the Prime Minister will play the role of interim president.

President Yun imposed military rule on December 3, along with South Korea, shocking the world community. Claiming that the nationality is in danger from the neighboring country North Korea and some opposition within the country, he said that military rule had to be imposed.

Shortly after the President imposed military rule, the army issued an order banning the activities of parliament and political demonstrations. Soon after, the army was mobilized . Soldiers and police were deployed in the National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament. Some soldiers descended from the helicopter on the roof of the parliament building.

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the country's largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, immediately opposed the president's move. He asked the MPs to attend the Parliament to vote against the President's move. And he also called on the South Korean people to protest against the president's actions. The President's move was also opposed by his own party, the People's Power Party (PPP). PPP leader Han Dong-hoon has also resigned on Monday.  Soon after the

, the majority of the parliament overturned the president's decision. Then the embarrassed President Yun withdrew his decision . But the parliamentarians of the opposition party brought an impeachment motion in the parliament saying that the president should be removed from office. After the President's party boycotted the vote in Parliament on December 7, two-thirds did not reach in favor of impeachment. There are 300 members in South Korea's parliament. Among them, 108 members belong to the President's PPP.

In particular, the PPP took a strategy to protect President Yeol from impeachment and make him resign. But President Yun apologized for implementing "martial law" and promised not to take such a step again. Meanwhile, the opposition parties again brought the impeachment proposal against the president on Friday. The second proposal was voted on Saturday .

After he did not resign, some MPs from the angry ruling party voted against the president. Because of this, the impeachment motion was passed against him. In Saturday's vote, 204 MPs voted in favor of the impeachment motion and 84 MPs voted against it. 8 votes were voided while 3 MPs remained neutral. With the impeachment of the President, the locals also celebrated with joy in places including the capital Seoul.

Yun, who was elected president two years ago, is in trouble because of his wife. His wife, Kim Keon Hee, is accused of illegally receiving an expensive brand of 'bag' as a gift and manipulating the stock market. President Yun was heavily criticized after refusing a demand for a detailed investigation into the expensive gifts received by his wife. Due to the same incident, Yun's party PPP suffered a big defeat in the parliamentary elections held last April.

After the opposition won a wide victory, Yun couldn't do as he wanted. Because of this, he imposed military rule against North Korea. Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun resigned after the incident. But he has already been arrested last Sunday on the charge of playing an important role in enforcing military rule and abusing the dignity of office to violate civil rights. If convicted, Kim faces the death penalty or life imprisonment.

This is not the first time that the parliament has impeached the president in South Korea. Earlier in 2016, President Park Geun-hye was impeached for helping a friend to extort money. Likewise, in 2004, another South Korean president, Roh Moo-hyun, was impeached. He was suspended for two months and later reinstated by the Constitutional Court.
