At least 25 people have died due to a powerful typhoon in Mayat Island. Officials suspect that more than 1,000 people have died.
Mayat's life has become chaotic after the strongest Chido storm in the last 90 years brought fierce winds. Mayat is a French-administered island located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique.
It is said that some structures, including hospitals, were destroyed due to the wind speed of 225 km . 'Some people are dying of hunger and thirst after the storm,' an MP told the BBC.
Rescuers are searching for survivors and struggling to restore drinking water, electricity and phone lines. The main hospital and other health centers were damaged . 
France has said that it is trying to mobilize humanitarian relief efforts for residents with a lack of food and water at a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius. According to the BBC, the French army is helping the affected and cleaning up the debris in some places. French Interior Minister Bruno Retaileau has visited storm-hit Mayat. 
The mayor of Mamodzou, the capital of Mayat, Ambdilwahedou Soumaila said that Cyclone Chid destroyed everything . 'The hospital has been affected. Schools are affected. Houses have been completely destroyed,' he told news agency AFP .
According to the French Ministry of the Interior, more than a million undocumented immigrants are living in Mayat. Mayat, located about 8,000 kilometers from the French capital Paris, is poorer than other regions of France and has faced gang violence and social unrest for decades.
More than three-quarters of people in Mayat live below the poverty line in France. There was tension in Mayat at the beginning of this year due to lack of water.
