South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has escaped impeachment. Only 195 MPs voted in favor of the impeachment motion against President Yoon in the vote held on Saturday in the South Korean Parliament.
A total of 195 votes did not reach the two-thirds majority of the total members of the Parliament. Therefore, I declare that the impeachment motion cannot be passed,' said Speaker Woo Won-sik .
There are a total of 300 MPs in the South Korean Parliament. The support of two-thirds ie 200 parliamentarians is required to pass the impeachment motion by the parliament . MPs from the People's Power Party (PPP) boycotted the vote in Parliament on Saturday. PPP has 108 MPs.
Tens of thousands of people demonstrated outside the parliament building while the voting was going on in the parliament. They demanded the resignation of President Yun . The protestors demanded that PPP MPs participate in the voting and vote in favor of impeachment.
President Yun unexpectedly implemented emergency "martial law" last Tuesday night. But the military rule announced by him was overturned by the parliament there within a few hours . Yun then retraced his steps . But the MPs of the opposition party have started the process of impeachment against Yun.
President Yun apologized on Friday for implementing 'martial law' and promised not to take such a step again. "I am very sorry and want to apologize to the people who were shocked," Yoon said in a televised address.
It was estimated that he would resign through his first address to the nation after the implementation of martial law. Yun, who did not mention anything about impeachment in his speech, did not resign from his position. According to the BBC, Yun said that his party in power will hand over the responsibility of normalizing the situation.
After the President's speech, the leader of the ruling PPP said that it was impossible for Yun to continue his regular activities. "His early resignation is inevitable," Han Dong-hoon of the PPP said. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, said the president's response had fueled public anger. He said that he would do everything possible to remove President Yun from office, according to the BBC.
Yun imposed martial law on Tuesday night citing threats from anti-state forces and North Korea. Shortly after declaring martial law, the army issued an order banning the activities of parliament and demonstrations by political groups.
But Yun's party PPP as well as opposition party MPs immediately said that Yun's announcement was illegal and unconstitutional . Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the country's largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, called on lawmakers to gather at the parliament to vote against the president's announcement and asked the Korean people to protest against the president's move.
After that, all the 190 MPs present in the Parliament voted against the President's decision. President Yun was forced to reverse his decision after the majority of the parliament decided. President Yun claimed that 'martial law is necessary to protect North Korea from communist forces and defeat anti-state elements', but it is said that he took this step due to pressure and scandals within the country.
Yun, who was elected president in 2022, was in trouble because of his wife. His wife, Kim Keon Hee, was accused of illegally receiving an expensive brand of 'bag' as a gift and manipulating the stock market. Because of this, in the parliamentary elections held last April, UN's party PPP suffered a big defeat. After the opposition party won a wide victory in the election, his government is unable to pass the desired laws .
