French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has resigned after failing to secure a majority in parliament against a motion of no confidence. Prime Minister Barnier submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday.

It is reported that President Macron has asked Barnier to take charge as acting prime minister until further arrangements are made. After Prime Minister Barnier tried to pass the 'Social Security Financial Plan' bill using the special powers granted by the constitution without parliamentary support, the opposition extreme right-wing party National Rally and left-wing party New Popular Front brought a motion of no confidence . The

proposal was voted on on Wednesday in the National Assembly, the lower house of the Parliament. Out of 577 MPs, 331 stood in favor of the motion of no confidence against Barnier. After the vote, Speaker Yael Braun-Pivet announced that the session of Parliament was closed, stating that Barnier should submit his resignation to the President.

According to the French media, President Macron is going to address the nation on Thursday evening.  The left-wing coalition New Popular Front (NFP), which won the most seats in the last parliamentary elections, had already criticized President Macron's decision to appoint Barnier as prime minister.

The extreme right-wing party National Rally (RN) along with the NFP have been saying that the budget brought by Barnier is unacceptable. RN leader Marine Le Pen has said the budget is 'toxic for France'.

Before the vote in the parliament, Barnier said that the country's economic problems will not be solved if he is removed from office. 'We have reached a moment of truth, of responsibility,' he said, 'we need to look at the reality of our debt.'
