South Korean parliamentarians have started the process of impeachment against President Eun Suk Yeol. President Yun shocked the entire country and the world by imposing martial law on Tuesday night. But within a few hours he was forced to withdraw martial law.
Less than two hours after the president's announcement, South Korean lawmakers entered the National Assembly (Parliament) and voted to block his decision. Some MPs said that they broke the barriers of the security personnel to enter the building. One of the MPs said that he climbed the wall and entered the parliament building and was helped by the protesters.
After all the 190 parliamentarians present in the parliament voted against martial law, President Yun announced that he would reverse his decision. But on Wednesday, the parliamentarians started the process of impeachment against President Yun .
President Yun claimed that martial law was necessary to protect South Korea from the communist forces of North Korea and defeat anti-state elements. Although he cited North Korea, President Yun's decision was seen as a response to domestic pressure and a series of scandals.
MPs will now vote on impeachment against the president in the coming days . If the impeachment is approved by a two-thirds majority of the parliament, Yun will have to face the case in the Constitutional Court. If the court also passes the impeachment against him, a new election will be held within 60 days.
