The government confirmed on Monday that 56 people were killed in southeastern Guyana after a stampede following a controversial referee's decision. In Njerekore, Guyana's second largest city, a clash between supporters of two rival teams has caused so many casualties, including children.

 

According to the Guyana government, the incident happened during a football match on Sunday. Locals Labe and Njerekore clashed in the final of the tournament held in honor of military leader Mamadi Domboya. Meanwhile, there was a rush and a fight. The Guyanese government confirmed the death toll at 56 on Monday alone. The dispute is believed to have started after a controversial goal. The referee sent off two players from the visiting Team Labe with red cards. At the same time, the referee also gave a penalty decision. The Prime Minister of Guyana, Ore Bah, has ordered an investigation into the incident and has claimed that the culprits will be severely punished. Prime Minister Bah has said that the incident is the most tragic in the history of the country.
