The Nobel Prize in Physics will be jointly awarded this year to two scientists active in research on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

American scientist John J. Hopefield and British-Canadian scientist Geoffrey E. Hilton have been decided to award the prize for "fundamental discoveries and inventions to enable machine learning through artificial neural networks," the Nobel Committee said on Tuesday.

Hopefield is a professor of molecular biology at Princeton University in the US. Hilton, a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, has studied AI.

Earlier, the Nobel Prize Committee decided to jointly award the medicine prize to American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun on Monday. The award was given to them for their discovery of 'microRNA' and its role in the regulation of genetic systems   .

The prize for chemistry is being announced on Wednesday and for literature on Thursday . The names of the winners of the peace and economics awards are scheduled to be announced on Friday.

The amount of the Nobel Prize is 11 million Swedish kroner (1 million US dollars). The winners will be awarded during a grand event on December 10.
