On Friday, 30-year-old Kamala Auji of Kanchanpur Krishnapur Municipality-1 Nigali died due to snake bite in Chhaugoth. Last year, the ward office launched a campaign to demolish slums in this area. But because the campaign of the ward could not be implemented effectively, Kamala died.
Section 168 sub-section (3) of the Criminal Code Act, 2074 has taken the Chhaupadi system as an offense related to discrimination and humiliating behavior. Also, there is a provision that women should not be kept in confinement or subjected to any other kind of discrimination, touching or inhuman treatment during menstruation or childbirth. However, in many rural areas of the Far West, even today, the bad practice of keeping menstruating women in the barn is still in place.
Since 2063, 14 women and girls have died in Achham, 2 in Doti, 3 in Bajura and recently 1 in Kanchanpur, 20 people have died in Far West. Due to the lack of effective government guidance and the superstition of keeping women confined in the name of tradition, Kamalas are losing their lives every year.
