After 2026, with the aim of serving nearly 10 million passengers annually, the infrastructure expansion work is going on at Tribhuvan International Airport for 10 hours from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am. According to Engineer Dipendra Shrestha, Director of Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project under the Civil Aviation Authority, infrastructure expansion works are being done in three different contracts at the airport every night.
According to Project Director Shrestha, works are being done to connect taxiway, international apron, hangar etc. with the aim of providing annual service to about 10 million passengers from both regions, domestically and internationally. According to him, the international apron and the taxiway connecting the apron with the runway to the north are being constructed with a joint investment of 7 billion by the Government of Nepal and the Civil Aviation Authority. This work has started from August 20, 2020. It will end in February 2026. This work is being done by the Chinese contractor Avic International.
The second contract within the airport is the infrastructure construction for the hangar. In the eastern part of the airport, a hangar area is being constructed for the Nepali Army, Nepal Airline Corporation, Yeti Airlines, Shree Airlines, etc. at a cost of around 4 billion rupees. This work started from November 2022. It will be completed in October 2026. Asian Development Bank has 78 percent loan investment in this while the remaining 22 percent amount is owned by Nepal Civil Aviation Authority. The Chinese company Avic/KDN/CCECC JV is involved in this project.
The third project within the airport is the construction of a taxi-way parallel to the runway. This project started in December 2022 and will be completed in October 2026. This project with an investment of around 4 billion rupees is being built by the Chinese company Gansu.
The construction work near the airport, which is connected to the only runway, has been scheduled from 23rd November from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. International flights during this period have been reduced. The airport has announced that it will stop flights at night till 18th of March. The construction work has been accelerated by closing the airport from 23rd of November at 10:00 PM, as there is work to be done on the sensitive area extending up to 75 meters from the runway.
At present, work is being done to bring natural resources such as soil, gravel, stones, sand from places such as Godavari, Champi, Tikabhairav, Lele, Dhading, Okharpauwa, Kavre, Roshi, Chhaimale, Dukuchhap, Sundarijal, Melamchi, Dhunibensi and other places in Lalitpur for three projects. According to the project, every night around 300 tippers carry 900 trips (consignments) of local construction materials. About 400 workers are mobilized around the clock for this work.
Kathmandu Airport The project says that this work being carried out within the airport spread over 670 ropani is the biggest so far. Construction materials are collected from Tinkune Garigaon and Guheshwari crossings at the resource center built inside the airport. Meanwhile in Cinamangal The existing oil corporation will be shifted to an area of 85 ropani connected to the Guheshwari forest to the north of the airport.
After the completion of these construction works, the distance from the center of the runway to the taxiway will be 172 meters. Now the distance between runway and taxiway is only 110 meters. This is not according to international standards. At present, large ships cannot be maneuvered on the taxiway and runway at the same time. Likewise International aircraft parking will increase from 11 to 18.
