Minister for Communications Bikram Timilsina has said that legal and technical preparations for remote work have been completed. In a meeting of the House of Representatives held on Wednesday, he said that an information system related to remote work has been developed and a policy decision has been made and final preparations for implementation are underway.
Responding to questions raised by lawmakers in the meeting, Minister Timilsina said that the government's policy and program for the upcoming fiscal year aims to make Nepal a 'tech hub' and develop information technology as a national strategic industry.
Earlier, the government had considered digital governance and youth employment as the main pillars through the '100-point agenda' of governance reforms. In this context, Minister Timilsina said in Parliament, 'The suggestion to establish a digital work hub and community IT center that can work from home in remote areas is acceptable.' The information system related to remote work has been developed and a policy decision is being made and is being prepared for implementation.'
The government has planned to transform the economy dependent on labor and exports into a service-oriented economy based on digital trade and remote work in the coming decade as a series of economic reforms. The minister said that the government is committed to implementing the goal of Digital Nepal by expanding reliable and quality internet services from remote to urban areas.
‘The internet network will be expanded extensively by introducing loose and transparent regulations and regulators, reviewing tax rates and removing entry barriers,’ he said. ‘In this context, the Information Technology Bill, Cyber Security Bill and AI Bill are in the preparation and drafting stages.’
The government plans to make policy arrangements related to appropriate visas, residence and collaboration centers to attract digital nomads along with remote work.
