A study has shown that YouTube's algorithm shows new users an 'AI slop' of more than 20 percent.
Video ' editing ' company ' Capwing ' research found that 21.33 percent of the videos shown to new users were AI slop ' . (AI slop ' ' refers to low-quality content created carelessly using automated computer applications. Such content is created to increase views and subscribers and influence perceptions.) For this research, ' Capwing '
surveyed 15,000 popular YouTube channels around the world. According to the research, the AI slop ' channel alone has 63 billion views. Which has 2.21 million subscribers. These channels are earning an annual income of about 117 million US dollars (more than 16 billion Nepalese rupees). Capwing created and tested a new ' YouTube account ' ( user account) for this research. Capwing reported that 104 of the first 500 videos shown in the new account's feed were '
AI slop ' . One-third (33 percent) of the 500 videos were ' Brainrot ' category. ( ' brain rot ' refers to compulsive , meaningless , low-quality video content that harms the mental or intellectual state of the viewer. Such videos are often created using AI.) According to Capwing, these channels are spread all over the world and are viewed globally . They have millions of subscribers . In Spain alone, 20 million people , , that is, almost half of the country's population, follow the trending AI channel . Similarly, Egypt has 18 million , , the US has 14.5 million and Brazil has 13.5 million followers . The most-watched channel in the study is in India . Which is operated under the name of '
Bandar Apna Dost ' . The channel has so far had 2.4 billion (2 billion 40 million) views. It shows the adventure stories of a character depicted as a monkey and ' Incredible Hulk '
. Who fight monsters and travel in a helicopter made of tomatoes . According to Capwing, the channel has earned 4.25 million US dollars annually. Meanwhile, Singapore-based ' Pouty Frenchie ' has 2 billion (2 billion) views. Which seems to be targeted at children. It contains adventure stories of French bulldogs. Where videos of driving a car in a candy forest, , eating crystal sushi have been made . Many of which have background music of children laughing . According to Capwing's estimates, it is earning about 4 million US dollars annually .
Similarly, the US-based ' Cuentos Fascinantes ' also seems to target children with cartoon stories and has 6.65 million subscribers . According to the study, it is the channel with the most subscribers .
Pakistan-based ' The AI World ' shows short videos made by AI of the devastating floods in Pakistan . Which is titled ' Poor People ,
Poor Family and Flood Kitchen ' ( Poor People , Poor Family and Flood Kitchen). Many of these videos use background sounds called ' Relaxing Rain , Thunder and Lightning Ambience for Sleep ' . This channel has about 1.3 billion viewers. According to Capwing, AI Slop is not only used on YouTube. It has also started appearing on social networks from X to Meta.
