Thousands of dinosaur footprints have been discovered in the Stelvio National Park in northern Italy. Researchers say the footprints could be around 210 million years old.

Some of the footprints are up to 40 centimeters long. The footprints are clustered together and many show clear marks of fingers and claws.

Photographer Elio della Ferrara spotted the footprints, which stretched for hundreds of meters on a steep hill in the park northeast of Milan last September.  Researchers have been investigating the matter ever since. The researchers believe the dinosaurs were prosauropods. These species had long necks, small heads and sharp claws.  They were herbivorous.

'I never imagined that I would find such an amazing find in my area,' said Milan-based paleontologist  Cristiano Dal Sasso. '

In the Triassic period (about 250 to 201 million years ago), the mountain range was a tidal flat  that later became part of the Alps

Prosauropods were up to 10 meters long, they walked on two legs . But in some places, handprints have also been found ahead of the footprints . This indicates that they also used their hands to rest on the ground .

The Italian Ministry of Culture said that the research was carried out with the help of drones and remote sensing technology because the research site is in a remote area .
