Firefox is set to introduce AI windows, competing with browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Opera. AI competition is increasing in the web browser market.
What you should know
Mozilla Firefox, one of the most popular browsers used to open web pages on the Internet, has created an 'AI Window'. It is said to have both an AI assistant and a chatbot.
Mozilla describes it as ‘smart and user-friendly’ that only runs when the user wants it to. Earlier in September, Firefox had unveiled a feature called ‘Seek to Summarize’. It uses AI to create a short summary of the webpage opened on the iPhone. The company claims that the feature was created based on the belief that the user should decide whether to use AI or not.
According to the company, the AI window will be available as a third option along with Firefox’s other private windows and classic windows. According to Mozilla’s writing on the ‘Mozilla Connect’ forum on Thursday, users will be able to choose their favorite AI model in the AI window. Details about this have not been disclosed. The company said that users interested in using the AI window can register their names on Mozilla’s waitlist.
The topic of including AI in web browsers has become a hot topic among technology companies. While older browsers like Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Safari are increasingly integrating AI, new AI companies like OpenAI and Perplexity are also launching their own web browsers. There is a competition to see which browser will be the most powerful and popular. Such a competition existed between Netscape and Internet Explorer in the 1990s. Then, by 2010, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome competed to become the dominant search engine.
Now, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and Firefox have all added AI features, starting the AI-browser war. Browsers with AI are now claiming to not only provide a list of webpages, but also to act as agents to help users or make their work easier. In the coming days, AI browsers will bring features to fill out forms, book tickets, and even draft emails.
