Selection of 8 scientists from Nepal for the seventh assessment report of IPCC

What you should know

8 scientists from Nepal have been selected for the Intergovernmental Panel on Global Climate Change (IPCC) seventh assessment report.

IPCC, the scientific body related to climate change, explains the information on new topics related to climate science and how climate change may affect the world in the coming days. It is the seventh report that the IPCC is going to produce through the voluntary contribution of scientists from all over the world.

Associate professor from Tribhuvan University for writing various chapters of the seventh evaluation report. Sudeep Thakuri and Dr. Narayan Gayre has been selected. Both are associate professors of environmental science at Tribhuvan University.  Dr. from ECMOD in

evaluation report writing. Bhupesh Adhikari and Dr. Amina Maharjan, Dr. from FIM Italy. Shobha Paudel, vice professor of the University of Groningen working in the Netherlands. Dr. Prajwal Pradhan from CIMMYT. Tech Sapkota has been selected as the main author of various chapters.

IPC Executive Group 1 Vice President Dr. Maheshwar Rupakheti has been selected as the review editor for Chapter-3. Rupakheti is working at the Riffs Institute in Germany.

Two other Nepali researchers are also involved in the special reports to be released by the IPCC. In which Professor Dr. Shobkar Dhakal has been selected as the lead author of the report titled Climate and Cities. Similarly, Dr. Bhupendra Das is the lead author for the Inventory for Short-Liped Climate Forcers. This report will be published in 2027.

The IPCC has three working groups. These groups focus on different aspects of climate science and climate change response. The first group studies the physics of climate change, the second group examines the effects of climate change and adaptation, and the third group focuses on mitigation of climate change. All the three groups prepare their separate reports. Later, those reports are integrated and a composite report is made.

This achievement is considered important not only at the individual level, but also at the national level, with a large number of Nepalese researchers. According to science writer and environment scholar Govinda Prasad Pokharel, so many Nepalese scientists have never had the opportunity to determine the global climate agenda. He said that their expertise can guide government decisions, climate policies, investments and long-term climate actions.

Similarly, in the last sixth evaluation report, four people from Nepal were selected for writing the main and special reports. Those involved in the climate sector say that the representation of 10 Nepalese scientists for the seventh report has sent a good message. Dr. who is also the vice president of

working group 1. Maheshwar Rupakheti says that Nepal has achieved historical achievements as a sensitive nation. He says, 'The selection of eight Nepali scientists through a global competition means that the scientific ability and credibility of Nepali scientists has been maintained. Our voices, knowledge and leadership are now decisive in shaping the global climate agenda and fighting climate change.'

After Rupakheti was elected to the IPCC Bureau in 2023, this is another achievement for Nepal.  It is said that the selection of scientists will help in building evidence-based climate strategies.
