New Delhi has granted a license to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service. This has opened the 'next frontier of connectivity' in India, according to India's Communications Minister.

The launch of Starlink, which provides high-speed Internet access to remote locations using low-Earth orbit satellites, has sparked intense debate in India on issues ranging from predatory pricing to spectrum allocation.

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said he had a "fruitful meeting" with Starlink's owner SpaceX chairman and chief operating officer Gweny Satwell.

"Sutwell hailed the license granted to Starlink, calling it a great start to the journey," the minister said on Tuesday on the Musk-owned social media platform X.

This comes after India's two largest telecom service providers, Jio Platforms and its rival Bharti Airtel, announced in March that they had signed an agreement with SpaceX to provide Starlink Internet to their customers.

Musk, the owner of SpaceX, has spoken to Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in Asia and the owner of the Jio platform, about how to provide satellite spectrum.

Although Musk's business interests in India are currently limited to the X, the tech entrepreneur's electric vehicle maker Tesla is preparing to enter the country.
