For foreign students and others who want to study in the US, there are signs that the visa process will be complicated. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has instructed his diplomats to monitor the social networks of foreign students and other types of visa applicants only to proceed with the visa process.
According to an American employee who told The New York Times , such a step was taken to deny visas to those who criticize America and Israel.
Secretary of State Rubio sent a detailed directive to US diplomatic missions around the world on March 25 that includes social media monitoring . According to the directive, the staff of the US consulate must send some students and exchange visitor visa applicants to the "Fraud Prevention Unit" and there they will have to study their social media activities.
According to the new rules, social media posts, comments and activities of student and exchange program visa applicants will be screened . Anyone found to harbor hostility toward American values, culture, government, or policies will likely be denied a visa. Social media activity of applicants for F, M and J visas (student and exchange programs) will be monitored in particular.
In accordance with the provisions of the executive order issued by President Donald Trump last January, the United States is currently going to adopt a policy of checking the social networks of foreign students and other citizens. In Trump's executive order, it was mentioned that the campaign to expel foreign citizens who hold anti-American views from the country will be started.
Trump also issued another executive order to "control anti-Semitic activity" by deporting foreign students who participated in demonstrations against Israel's ongoing war in Gaza.
Rubio's letter contained clear instructions on the basis for granting or denying visas, the Times reported. Also, it has been disclosed about which applicant's social network should be checked . Accordingly, people who are suspected of having sympathies or connections with terrorist organizations, who have obtained visas for student or exchange programs from October 7, 2023 to August 31, 2024, and whose visas have been revoked after October 7, are asked to monitor social media on priority.
On October 7, 2023, Hassam invaded southern Israel. At that time, 1200 Israelis were killed and 250 people were taken hostage by Hamas. Since then, Israel has been conducting air and ground attacks on Gaza. According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed.
