Skype, which established the concept of online video calling service, is going to be closed. The company has announced that this app, which was purchased by Microsoft in 2011 for 8.5 billion dollars, will be closed forever from May 5th.
By shutting down Skype, Microsoft will focus on strengthening its video conferencing platform 'Microsoft Teams', according to the Associated Press. Skype users can log in to Teams from their Skype account. According to Forbes, Skype had 300 million active monthly users in 2016, which dropped to 360 million in 2023.
Founded by a group of engineers in Estonia in 2003, this app pioneered the service of making telephone calls over the Internet instead of landline phones. Skype, which transformed the communication facility from a service that converts audio signals into digital signals through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), later also started providing video call services . In 2005, it was bought by an e-commerce site called eBay . Skype, once the dominant force in
video communication, has been overshadowed by the rise of other platforms. Although Skype paved the way in the development of video calling apps like Zoom, Google Meet, Face Time, WhatsApp, Skype later fell behind in the competition with these apps.
Microsoft 365 president Jeff Tepper said in an interview with The Verge that users should not panic because all contacts, message history, call logs, photos, and Skype accounts can be transferred to Microsoft Teams even if Skype is closed. "Skype has been shut down to include a new feature with artificial intelligence in Teams," Bloomberg wrote, quoting Tapper.
