In the district, 409 people have been arrested in drug-related cases in one year. According to the District Police Office, in the fiscal year 2082/083, 20 women and 389 men were arrested in drug-related cases.
“The situation of drug users in society is gradually becoming alarming,” said SP Netramani Giri at a press conference organized at the District Police Office, Kanchanpur. “We are taking this seriously; every day, one or two people are being arrested.” He stated that they are trying to pursue both public awareness and legal action simultaneously for drug control.
According to SP Giri, out of the total 395 inmates in the Mahendranagar prison on Wednesday, 160 are drug users. Of the 65 people held in various police detention centers across the district, 32 are there for drug-related offenses.
Last fiscal year, police seized 526 grams of marijuana, about 6.5 kilograms of hashish, 658 grams of brown heroin, and 726 tablets. In the district, 231 drug-related cases were registered in one year. “Drug use is gradually spreading,” said SP Giri. “It is not possible to stop this by police or government agencies alone; everyone’s role is equally necessary.” He said that public awareness activities at the community level are needed.
