The water level of the Mahakali River is continuously rising due to the unabated rain in the hilly areas. The flow of the Mahakali has increased since Monday night. The movement of four-wheeled vehicles, which was stopped on the Sharda Barrage bridge since Tuesday morning due to the increase in the water level, has not yet been restored.
According to DSP Tek Bahadur Rawat of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, the water level of the Mahakali has reached 124,454 cusecs as of 1:30 pm on Tuesday. It had crossed 100,000 cusecs since Tuesday morning.
The water level of the Mahakali has increased due to continuous rain in hilly districts including Darchula, Baitadi, Dadeldhura. With the increase in the water level in the Mahakali, the movement of four-wheeled vehicles has been stopped on the Sharda Barrage bridge since Tuesday morning. Passengers are commuting on foot after the movement of large vehicles has been stopped.
The movement of four-wheeled vehicles has been banned as soon as the water flow in the Mahakali exceeds 100,000 cusecs, citing the danger posed by the dilapidated bridge of the 100-year-old Sharda Barrage.
The closure of the bridge, which opens 4 times a day for 7 hours, has left passengers going to various parts of India in trouble. The Maitri bus service from Mahendranagar to Delhi and Dehradun has also been affected.
