On Sunday morning, the water flow at the Sharda Barrage (Mahakali River) was around 35,000 cusecs, but according to the afternoon measurement, it had risen to nearly 60,000 cusecs, Kanchanpur Chief District Officer Madan Koirala has informed. According to him, as rainfall continues in the hilly areas, the river flow may increase further. Therefore, residents of the coastal areas near the Mahakali River have been urged to exercise necessary caution, avoid unnecessary movement along the riverbanks, and follow the notices issued by the local administration and security agencies.
The administration has appealed to the general public not to fish, cross the river, or engage in risky activities along the riverbanks, to move to safe locations if necessary, and to immediately inform the local administration or security agencies in case of any emergency situation.
Similarly, the Kanchanpur administration has stated that monitoring has been increased in settlements along the Mahakali, low-lying areas, and regions at risk of flooding. Chief District Officer Koirala informed that local governments, security agencies, and disaster management mechanisms have been kept in a state of readiness.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in most places of Sudurpaschim Province from the 3rd to the 5th of Shrawan. According to the department, due to continuous rainfall, the water level in small rivers, streams, and canals may suddenly rise, and there is a risk of inundation and erosion, so a high level of alertness has been requested.
