The Nepali Communist Party (NCP), the main opposition party in the Far West Province Assembly, has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah.
On Thursday, the NCP parliamentary party meeting decided that Chief Minister Shah had lost his majority since the ruling UML had withdrawn its support to the government. Parliamentary party leader Khagraj Bhatta said that he should resign from his post immediately to pave the way for the formation of a new government.
There was a government in the Far West led by the Congress and UML. Chief Minister Shah dismissed the UML ministers on Wednesday after a dispute over the budget presented for the upcoming fiscal year. UML also withdrew its support to the government on Wednesday evening.
The NCP parliamentary party meeting decided to initiate the initiative to form a new government under its own leadership. The NCP is the largest party in the Far West Province Assembly. "We have formed a five-member team to hold discussions with other parties to form a government under our leadership," said Bhatta, the parliamentary party leader. The negotiating team includes NCP parliamentary party leader Khagraj Bhatta, as well as provincial assembly members Prakash Rawal, Man Bahadur Dhami, Khushi Ram Chaudhary and Ramesh Dhami. The NCP is the largest party in the 53-member Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly with 20 MPs (excluding suspended members and the Speaker). The Congress, which is currently leading the government, has 18 MPs. Among them, MP Prakash Bahadur Deuba has been in the US for a long time. There are 11 UML and 1 RPP MP. One provincial assembly member's post is vacant.
