A DSP of Nepal Police who made the statement “We are not Balen’s police, we are Nepal Police...” during an awareness program held at a school in Kailali has been summoned to the District Police Office. He was called in after a circular from the Provincial Police and the Police Headquarters in Naxal.

According to office sources, DSP Chaudhary was summoned and asked for clarification, and an investigation will be conducted by visiting the school itself.

DSP Prasanna Raj Chaudhary, stationed at the Area Police Office in Sukhad, Kailali, made the statement during a drug abuse awareness program at Darakh Secondary School in Harinagar, Ghodaghodi Municipality–5, on Tuesday: “We are not Balen’s police, we are Nepal Police. We are the police who deliver justice to those who have suffered injustice and oppression...”

He made this remark while discussing the risks of drug abuse with students. After a video of the statement was made public, DSP Chaudhary was summoned to the District Police Office on Wednesday.

However, Kailali Police spokesperson Yogendra Timilsina said that DSP Chaudhary was called to the district not because of his remarks to students in Sukhad, but to inquire about other complaints from locals. “Locals in Sukhad had been expressing grievances about his role, so he was called to the district on Wednesday for clarification and regular reporting,” spokesperson Timilsina said. “It was just a coincidence that the video of his remarks at the school went viral. That topic will also be discussed.”

The DSP has said he feels no regret about what he said. He claims that although he gave the example to inspire children and students, only that statement was made viral.

Dinesh Lamichhane, a teacher at the school, said that the Area Police Office in Sukhad had requested time from the school to conduct an awareness program against drug abuse. “According to the plan for police to conduct awareness programs against drug abuse in secondary schools in Sukhad, the program was held at our school as well. We had students from grades 9 and 10 participate,” teacher Lamichhane said. “During the class, we were not aware of the statement that later went viral. We only found out after seeing the clip go viral.”

Kailali SP Narendra Chand did not answer the phone when contacted for further comment, and DSP Chaudhary could not be reached.

A local said that DSP Chaudhary had been strict in market monitoring and law enforcement, which had led to dissatisfaction among local traders and others. According to the local, Chaudhary also confiscated unauthorized goods during market inspections.
