In the last three years, 47 people have lost their lives in road accidents in Baitadi. During the three years, 126 people have been injured in 34 road accidents in different parts of the district.
Looking at the data of the last three years, it is seen that road accidents are increasing every year and the number of people who lose their lives in accidents is also increasing. In the fiscal year 2080/81, 7 people (4 men and 3 women) lost their lives in 8 road accidents, while 42 people (34 men and 8 women) were injured.
In the last fiscal year 2081/82, 11 people (5 men and 6 women) died in 10 road accidents, while 13 men and 12 women were injured.
In the current fiscal year 2082/83, 16 road accidents have occurred so far, said Police Inspector Bhuwan Prasad Timilsena, spokesperson of the District Police Office, Baitadi. In the current fiscal year, 29 people (24 men and 5 women) lost their lives in accidents in different parts of the district, while 59 people (34 men and 25 women) were injured, he said.
Carrying more passengers than capacity in rural areas, lack of timely maintenance of vehicles, technical malfunctions in vehicles and poor road conditions are the main reasons for the increase in road accidents, said Baitadi Traffic Police In-charge Sye Yagyaraj Pant.
‘We have been alerting drivers about road accidents from time to time,’ he said, ‘Since the beginning of the current fiscal year, we have taken action against 1,437 vehicles, both small and large, on all roads in the district.’
In the month of Asad alone, one person died and more than 40 were injured when two buses coming from Dhangadhi to Baitadi collided on a paved road.
