Emergency work is currently underway in the area where the guide bund was washed away by the Mahakali flood two years ago. The Mahakali Bridge Planning Office has stated that work is currently being done in the area to protect the guide bund.
The depth of the river is more than 10 meters in the area where the guide bund was washed away by the Mahakali flood. Currently, work is being done to fill the hole and prevent erosion with geo bags and gabion mesh. ‘The work of filling the pit will be completed within a day or two, after which the launching (spur) will be constructed,’ said Bhojraj Rana, sub-engineer of the Mahakali Bridge Project, ‘To secure the dam, the work of filling the pit from the side and filling the gabion mesh is being done.’ According to sub-engineer Rana, the work of collecting boulders for the construction of the launching is also being done in the area. The construction of the launching will be done from the boulders. A launching of about 31 meters wide and 300 meters long will be constructed. The work of constructing the launching and filling the gabion mesh is being done by an army team. Around 400 Nepali Army personnel are deployed on the work daily. Last year, the army team also carried out the work of rebuilding the collapsed guide bund and changing the river course. Even now, work is underway to change the course of the river, starting from protecting the guide bund in Asar. Now, the course of the river has been changed and diverted to the middle.
According to the Mahakali Bridge Planning Office, the course of the river has been changed by channelizing about 400 meters. ‘We have set a target to complete all the work by Asar 25. Even after the work of filling the pit is completed, only the work of making the launching by the army remains,’ said Sub-Engineer Rana, ‘For that too, boulders and other materials are in preparation.’
The work is currently being carried out by the Bridge Planning Office. The responsibility of the head of the Bridge Planning Office has also been given to Rajesh Yadav, the head of the Road Division Office, Mahendranagar.
If a major flood occurs in the Mahakali before Asar 25, it seems that there will be obstacles in the work. The changed river may flow near the guide bund again, making it impossible to work. For this reason, technicians say that work is being done in the area with great enthusiasm.
The construction of a four-lane concrete bridge on the Mahakali River has been completed. Traffic has also started on the bridge for four years. The guide bund and access road of the pond to be built on both sides of the bridge have not yet been completed. The Mahakali River in that area is 2 kilometers wide. Since the bridge is only 800 meters long, ponds of 6/600 meters wide and 2800 meters long are being built on both sides. The construction work has not been completed yet due to problems such as the design and variation of the guide bund of the pond.
According to the initial design, boulders were to be used in the guide bund. But when the construction company did not get the boulders, the design was changed and it was made of reinforced concrete. But the road design department did not approve it. The construction company worked without even making a variation based on verbal agreement. Even though the Mahakali flood destroyed the guide bond, the issue of changing the design was raised again. The department has also terminated the contract with the bridge construction company Kumar Shrestha CFEC JV. The department unilaterally terminated the contract while the dispute was pending at the Nepal Arbitration Council. After the termination of the contract, the remaining work of the bridge project has become even more confusing.
