A journalist who assaulted a ward chairperson in Kanchanpur has been suspended.

The Federation of Nepali Journalists Kanchanpur branch has suspended Aishwarya Kunwar from her position as a branch member for acting against her official dignity and conduct.

The branch's meeting on Monday said that serious attention has been drawn to the incident of assaulting a ward chairperson. In a statement signed by branch secretary Kundan Pandey, it has also urged all media personnel to fully comply with the journalist code of conduct.

On Sunday afternoon, journalist Kunwar assaulted Rabindra Devkota, ward chairperson of Bhimdatta Municipality-18, while capacity building and drug awareness classes for children of the Wall Club were being conducted at Hotel Sweet Dream in Mahendranagar. Kunwar assaulted Devkota while the two were arguing.

Police have arrested journalist Kunwar from the spot. The ward chairman has filed a case of indecent behavior against him. The police have registered the case and are conducting necessary investigations.

According to the Criminal Code 2074, it is prohibited for anyone to enter a public place or a place where they do not have the legal right to enter and behave indecently or to assault or harass women, children and physically disabled people in a public place. There is a provision that a person who does or causes someone to do so can be imprisoned for up to one year or fined 10,000, or both.
