From Shrawan to mid-Baishakh of the current fiscal year, 61 vehicle accidents have killed 12 people and injured 116 others in Dadeldhura.

According to Akash Rawal, Chief of the District Traffic Police Office, Dadeldhura, the accidents have added a challenge to road safety in the district.  According to traffic police statistics, 12 people lost their lives in vehicle accidents in Shrawan, five in Bhadau, one in Kartik, one in Magh and four in Falgun.

Chief Rawal said that the main causes of accidents are driver negligence, the tendency to carry more passengers than the capacity of the vehicle and the fact that most of the roads in the district are narrow and risky.  The risk of accidents increases when necessary precautions are not taken while operating vehicles, especially on unpaved and narrow roads in rural areas.

The traffic police has been conducting public awareness programs regularly to reduce accidents. The office has stated that an awareness program on traffic rules has been conducted in coordination with schools, local levels, transport entrepreneurs and drivers and that priority has been given to providing information on road safety.

Similarly, action has also been taken against drivers and vehicles violating traffic rules. In the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, 1,559 vehicles have been taken into action for violating various types of traffic rules. The District Traffic Police Office has stated that Rs. 1,183,500 in revenue has been collected from these vehicles.

The police have urged drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, control speed, regularly check the technical condition of vehicles and passengers to follow the rules related to safe travel to reduce accidents.

With the expansion of roads in the hilly districts of the Far West including Dadeldhura, traffic pressure is increasing. However, due to the condition of the road, driver negligence and lack of full compliance with traffic rules, accidents have been recurring.
