Minister of State for Social Development of the Far West Province Government, Saraswati Khadka, has said that each ward at the local level should allocate a budget for the sustainable development of the sports sector. Describing sports as an important sector linked to the development of youth's capacity, discipline, health and the identity of the province, she stressed that activities ranging from player production to infrastructure construction should be prioritized from the ward level.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Far West Province-level President's Running Shield Competition that began in Tundikhel, Dadeldhura on Thursday, Minister of State Khadka said that not only the provincial government but also the local government and ward offices should be equally responsible for the overall development of the sports sector. She said that since the foundation of sports is schools and communities, the work of identifying talent and producing players should start from the local level. She expressed the view that each ward should prioritize sports in the budget.
She said that investment in this sector will be fruitful in the long term as sports lead the youth on a positive path, create disciplined citizens and develop a sense of unity in society. She said that the local government needs to be proactive to provide opportunities to talented players in villages and hamlets. Minister of State Khadka stated that the government has not been able to allocate budget for the sports sector as expected and expressed confidence that this sector will be given more priority in the coming days. She expressed confidence that the central government will include programs for the development of sports, such as infrastructure construction, player training, regular organization of competitions, and talent protection in the budget and plans.
Stating that the central government's budget has received less budget for the sports sector, she pointed out the need to increase investment by including sports-related programs in the Red Book, and said that sports should be understood as an investment in building the future, not as an expense. She emphasized that all three levels of government, including the federal, provincial, and local governments, should bring budgets and programs with a common commitment for the development of sports.
Minister of State Khadka said that this year's provincial-level President's Running Shield competition is historic. According to her, the provincial-level President's Running Shield is being organized for the first time in a hilly district. Earlier, provincial-level competitions were focused on Kailali and Kanchanpur. He said that organizing the competition in the hilly district of Dadeldhura sent a message of providing equal opportunities to all geographical areas of the province.
