Police have arrested four members of the same family on charges of abusing the principal after he failed the school teacher's exam.

Damodar Ojha, the principal of Pipalkot Secondary School Lojani in Shivnath Rural Municipality-4, was accused of abusing a woman by his relatives on Thursday afternoon.

Tara Mahata, 37, her husband Prem Mahata, 42, Mohan Mahata, 42, and Sakuntala Mahata, 34, of Khadik, Shivnath Rural Municipality-4, were arrested on Friday on charges of abusing the principal, said District Police Office Baitadi spokesperson Police Inspector Baldev Badu. The remand of all four has been extended by 5 days and an investigation is underway, said Badu.

According to School Management Committee Chairman Bharat Singh Saund, the police showed interest in the incident after the abuse of Principal Ojha came out on social media.

What is the incident?
The school had called for applications for the recruitment of a primary level teacher at Pipalkot Secondary School on Chaitra 26 last year, and 17 people had applied. 14 people, including Tara Mahata, participated in the exam.

Tara had failed the exam held at Sullekhan, the rural municipality center, on Baisakh 13. ‘Before the exam, I had received a message from a third party that if Tara’s husband passed his wife, he would provide financial assistance of Rs 200,000 to the school and bear the exam expenses of Rs 50,000,’ said Management Committee Chairman Saund. ‘I made the exam fair because I did not need anyone’s help in this situation.’

After Tara’s relatives came to the school on Thursday alleging that she had misbehaved with the woman, the management committee held a discussion between the principal and the accuser. The accuser said that the principal should resign and apologize publicly, and Principal Ojha accepted it, said Chairman Saund. He said that the accused took the principal outside the school gate and mistreated him.

Tara's husband Prem Mahata has alleged that Principal Ojha called him repeatedly to tell him the model of the paper and called him to school on a holiday and mistreated his wife the day before the exam. 'I was in India for work.' He said, 'I came home after I came to know that my wife had been mistreated.'

Principal Ojha said that he had not mistreated anyone and that he had accused him out of anger over failing the exam. He said that after they made empty accusations, he even apologized in front of the Vibyas president in the office. "When I was about to go home after apologizing, as soon as I reached the gate, they slapped me once or twice and treated me inhumanly," said Prof. Ojha. "Only the senior chairman Saund saved me."
