Preparations are underway to operate a market in the district headquarters for the purpose of selling vegetables and fruits produced in the district. The market is being started to facilitate the sale of local produce.

For this, a 19-member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Tanka Bahadur Chhetri, ward chairman of Amargadhi-5. The committee has stated that the market will be operated every Saturday from Chaitra 14.

Farmers have taken the operation of the market positively. Prasad Dutta Awasthi of Ganyapadhura said that the market will create a good opportunity for displaying and selling local products. ‘It is a good opportunity for farmers,’ he said, ‘Fresh vegetables can be delivered to consumers through the market.’

Vegetables and other agricultural produce produced here are forced to be sold at cheap prices through traders. Tilak Raj Bhatta of Bhatkanda mentioned that farmers are suffering due to lack of markets. ‘Farmers are forced to ask 10 traders to sell vegetables,’ he said, ‘it is difficult to get a price according to the labor.’ He said that he hopes that a fair price will be obtained after the market starts.

Ward Chairman Chhetri said that currently, middlemen buy vegetables produced by the residents from the fields and sell them to consumers at a high price. He said that arrangements will be made for farmers to bring their products to the market and sell them. This is expected to reduce the role of middlemen and provide fresh products to consumers at a cheaper price.

He said that coordination is being done with the district-based Agricultural Knowledge Center and other stakeholders to operate the market. He said that efforts are being made to involve various farmer groups in the district in coordination with the Agricultural Knowledge Center. A three-member monitoring team has been formed under the coordination of the head of the District Coordination Committee to conduct regular monitoring.

The market will be operated behind the bus park near the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Ward Chairman Chhetri said that there is a plan to coordinate with local farmers, consumers, the provincial government and donor agencies to operate the market in the long term.

An attempt was made to operate the market in 2065 BS. However, due to the condition of the road, lack of cleanliness and poor management in the area where the market will be located, it could not continue. Ward Chairman Chhetri said that the road has now been managed, the market has been expanded and cleanliness has been improved.

Discussions have also been held on the issue of constructing a permanent structure in the area of the Construction Entrepreneurs Association (Ranidhara area) for the long-term management of the market. Although there is a plan to construct a tent in the area where the Construction Entrepreneurs Association is located and operate a permanent market, Ward Chairman Chhetri said that it has been decided to operate it behind the bus park for the time being due to the risk of landslides in the rainy season in that area.
