Locals of Amargadhi Municipality-6 have launched a protest, alleging that they have been denied permission for a long time to build a permanent dumping site.

They formed a struggle committee against garbage and demonstrated at the ward office on Thursday.

The municipality has been dumping garbage in various temporary places near the district headquarters for years due to the lack of a permanent dumping site. Earlier, garbage was being dumped in the Kuiyadhar area of Amargadhi-7, but it was removed from there after protests from locals.

After that, garbage has started being dumped on the side of the road leading to Malam village, about two kilometers from the district headquarters, where all types of rotting and non-rotting garbage are currently being burned in one place. Locals also complain that this has increased smoke, odor and pollution.

For a long-term solution to garbage management, the municipality has purchased 14 ropanis of land from locals in the Gunegad area under Amargadhi-6. The land was purchased at the government rate and an environmental impact assessment has also been completed. However, the construction process has not been able to move forward as the assessment report has not been finalized. The locals have become dissatisfied with the preparations to build a waste management center at this location.

According to the Sangharsh Samiti, the municipality initially informed that it had a plan to cultivate lemons in the area. Later, when it tried to move forward with the process of constructing a waste management center, locals have accused it of hiding the real plan and misleading people.

According to Ganga Tamrakar, the chairperson of the Sangharsh Samiti, the Gunegad area is unsuitable for waste management. “There are drinking water sources, irrigation sources, roads leading to schools and dense settlements around this area,” he said. “Heaping waste in such a place poses a serious risk to public health and the environment.” He said that if the decision is taken without the consent of the locals, it will lead to a forced boycott of the elections to the House of Representatives.

Locals have complained that despite repeated protests, discussions and memorandums, no concrete initiative has been taken by the municipality. Locals say that even though the all-party discussion held in 2080 Pus decided to manage waste at an alternative site on the road leading to Malam village within three months, even that decision has not been implemented.
