A tiger census will be conducted in Shuklaphanta National Park and the Arpass area immediately after the election to the House of Representatives. The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Tiger Survey Field Task Force held on Tuesday.

Senior Conservation Officer Chandrashekhar Chaudhary said that the decision was made to conduct the tiger census after the elections as park staff will also be deployed for election work. “The decision has been made to postpone the census since the elections and the tiger census are scheduled to coincide,” he said. “There will be a shortage of manpower as the staff will be deployed for the election.”

Under the National Tiger Census, automatic cameras will be installed in Shuklaphanta, Laljhadi-Mohana Protected Area and Jogbuda in Dadeldhura. The area named Shuklaphanta-Laljhadi-Jogbuda Complex has been divided into 260 grids of 2 x 2 kilometers. A pair of automatic cameras will be installed in each grid after identifying potential areas where tigers roam.

Cameras were installed in these areas in the 2022 census as well. At that time, tigers were seen in Laljhadi and Jogbuda. In that census, the number of 36 adult tigers in this complex was made public. It was made public that there were 28, including 16 females and 12 males, and 8 based on analysis.

Tigers are counted every year in Shuklaphanta. The count is done in areas that are at risk of poaching. According to the count done last year, the number of tigers has reached 43.
