Two Sher Bahadur Deubas from Ruwakhola, Ganyapadhura-1, Dadeldhura. One Sher Bahadur Deuba served as Prime Minister five times and conducted government affairs. The other Sher Bahadur was known in the country and abroad as 'Kheer Baje'.
On Wednesday, a photo and video of senior leader of the National Independent Party Balendra Shah eating kheer at Bajeko Kheer Shop in Sahukharka, Dadeldhura, is currently going viral. Leader Shah, who entered Kailali via Bardiya on Tuesday, has been on a tour of the hilly districts of the Far West since Wednesday.
Two years ago, photos and videos of top UML leaders from the east and west, including former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, eating kheer at the same Bajeko Kheer Shop were widely circulated on social media.
It is not only high-profile Balen or KP Sharma Oli who taste the kheer cooked in the oven of the Kheer Shop. From Madan Bhandari onwards, every high-ranking leader has tasted the kheer here. Karna Bahadur Deuba, the son of Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is currently running this kheer shop, says, ‘Madan Bhandari, Madhav Nepal, Baburam Bhattarai have also tasted the kheer from our shop. Former Prime Minister Deuba is from his own family.’ Those who travel through Sahukharka, which is located on the Bhimdatta Highway, which connects the seven hilly districts of the Far West, are unlikely to miss the taste of his grandfather’s kheer shop.
A foreign journalist who came with the then German ambassador Rudiger Lemp wrote about Deuba’s photo under the title ‘Snow Kheer’, and Karna remembers that his name spread abroad.
Around 2024, Sher Bahadur climbed Sahukharka on the Bhimdatta Highway from his village. Karna Bahadur says that his father (the kheer grandpa) started the kheer shop around 2032. After his death three years ago at the age of 82, his son Karna Bahadur is taking over the Kheer Bajeko Bindo.
The Kheer Bajeko Shop, which has gained a lot of attention in recent years, has overcome many difficulties to reach this point. It has provided shelter to many hikers during difficult times. ‘In my memory, this deep lake in the Mahabharata Mountains used to have thick snow for months,’ says Karna Bahadur, recalling the past days, ‘There were no shops like there are now at that time. We were the only shop. Cars did not run. We were the only place for hikers to stay.’
He said that Karna, who has been making Kheer with his father, has also been doing this job for 26 years.
