Darchula students rush to university to find teachers ahead of exams

What you should know

Omkar Joshi, a student of Gokuleshwar Multiple Campus, Gokuleshwar under Sudurpaschim University, is studying in the sixth semester under the Faculty of Science.

The university has scheduled the sixth semester exams for this Magh 23. But some students, including Joshi, and professors of the campus have reached the university's central office in Mahendranagar in search of a teacher.

Since they have to teach without a mathematics teacher, they came to the central office of Sudurpaschim University towards the end of the academic session in search of a teacher. 'We have repeatedly demanded to send a mathematics professor, the campus also wrote letters, but nothing has been heard,' Joshi said, 'We have also locked the campus, but the demand has not been fulfilled.' According to him, the campus has been locked for 20 days.

In 2075, Gokuleshwor Multiple Campus was made a part of Sudurpaschim University. Campus head Parmal Singh Mahara said that the manpower and physical infrastructure that were there when the campus was integrated are still in the same condition.

According to him, Madan Bahadur Chand, an associate professor of mathematics, was working in the science faculty on the campus. Two and a half years ago, associate professor Chand got a job and reached the central office. He stayed in the dean's office of the science faculty for a year. Then he was transferred to the central campus in Mahendranagar. 'After Chand sir's transfer, the sir who taught in BEd is teaching, but that has not completed our studies,' said Deepak Singh Thagunna, who is studying in the fifth semester of B.Sc. 'We have also requested the campus administration and the university to return Chand sir's job, but we have not been heard.'

Sunil Danga, the president of the campus's self-government, said that they have been demanding for teachers for two years. He said that they had to come to the central office because their demands were not heard even when the campus was locked down the last time.

Currently, 6 students of the campus and the campus head Mahara, along with Vice Chancellor Professor Hemraj Pant and Registrar Professor Binod Lekhak, have reached Mahendranagar to meet Dean of the Faculty of Science Prem Singh Saund. But since Vice Chancellor Pant and Registrar Lekhak are in Kathmandu, they could not meet. Mahara said that he met Dean Saund and assured that the necessary manpower would be arranged.

Gokuleshwor Multiple Campus does not have a professor not only for mathematics in the Faculty of Science but also for zoology. Currently, the professor of botany is teaching zoology. ‘This is completely unacceptable, it is happening as if a Nepali teacher is teaching English,’ said Dean Saund of the Faculty of Science, ‘A teacher who teaches in the Faculty of Education cannot teach in the Faculty of Science, I have told him not to teach from now on.’ He said that he came to know about this only after the students came.

He said that he has also instructed the botany professor not to teach zoology. He said that the teaching and learning will be managed online using the manpower available at the central campus. He said that discussions have been held with both the students and the campus head and now the matter will be discussed with the higher authorities as well.
