Despite two or three attempts at repair, the pond has not been able to be put back into use as the problem has not been resolved in the long term.
What you should know
The 3.2 million liter irrigation pond located near Pokhara Bazaar in Amargadhi Municipality-7 has been unused for the past 15 years. The pond, which was established in 2032 BS, was initially used but fell into disrepair after a few years.
Due to lack of timely maintenance and reconstruction, the pond is now becoming more dilapidated.
The inner part of the pond has cracked and water leakage has been observed, so irrigation has not been possible from it for a long time. Grass has grown inside the pond. Locals say that the structure built for irrigation has become neglected.
Despite two or three attempts to repair it in between, the problem could not be solved in the long term, so the pond has not been able to be used again.
Local farmers are facing serious irrigation problems due to the lack of reconstruction of the dilapidated irrigation pond. Although the aim was to expand irrigation facilities to all the villages in the area from the pond, the farmers are facing problems after the pond has reached a state of disrepair. Bhoj Tamrakar of Amarpurtol, Amargadhi Municipality-7, said that although another small pond has been built near the pond, it will only provide irrigation services to some citizens of Bhatgaun and Bhata villages, so farmers in other villages are deprived of irrigation facilities.
Locals say that farming has been affected due to the lack of irrigation and the farmers are worried. Farmers in Tiladi village, Amargadhi Municipality-7, are also facing difficulties in doing agricultural work due to the lack of irrigation.
Local farmer Ganesh Prasad Bhatta said that although most local farmers depend on agriculture, their fields have started to fall apart due to the lack of irrigation facilities. He complains that although the farmers are willing to work, they have not been able to increase production due to the lack of necessary irrigation infrastructure.
It is expected that if the dilapidated irrigation pond is reconstructed and put into regular operation, it will bring great relief to local farmers. Farmers are confident that irrigation will become easier after the pond comes into operation, increasing agricultural production and having a positive impact on the livelihood of farmers.
According to Ward Chairman Khadak Bahadur Bohara of Amargadhi Municipality-7, a budget of Rs 30 million was allocated by the central government for the reconstruction of the pond in the current fiscal year. However, the work could not proceed due to the Genji movement that took place during the preparations for the reconstruction and the government that was formed thereafter, which stopped the budget. Ward Chairman Bohara said that the tender process will be taken forward and the reconstruction will begin as soon as the budget is released.
He informed that another small tank with a capacity of 50,000 liters was built nearby as an alternative after the pond fell into disuse. Ward Chairman Bohara said that about 700 ropanis of land has been irrigated for vegetable cultivation from the pond. However, the farmers are still in trouble as the small tank does not provide sufficient irrigation.
According to locals, if the reconstruction of large structures could have been done in a timely manner, it would have greatly helped in expanding agriculture as well as commercial vegetable production. Locals say that budget release and rapid reconstruction are necessary to bring the historic irrigation pond, which has been unused for a long time, back into operation.
