The Federation of Non-Governmental Organizations, Nepal District Branch, Dadeldhura, has expressed serious concern over the efforts being made to devalue and discourage the contributions made by social organizations in the changing political situation.
The Federation submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Office, Singha Durbar, through the District Administration Office, Dadeldhura, on Sunday, demanding that the government ensure that civil society activities can continue in a fear-free environment.
In the memorandum, the Federation has expressed gratitude for the government's role in creating an environment for the election, noting that challenges have been seen to democracy, the constitution and the system in the aftermath of the Genji movement and demonstrations on Bhadra 23 and 24.
The Federation has emphasized the common role of the government, the private sector and civil society in the overall development of the country. The memorandum states that as stakeholders of civil society, organizations have been providing watchdog, vigilance and partnership from the village to the center, and have been making significant contributions to social transformation, community development, establishment of democracy, service delivery during conflict, empowerment of helpless and backward communities and women, capacity development and humanitarian assistance in times of disaster.
The Federation claims that in recent times, some elements have been trying to devalue and discourage the contributions of social organizations and criminalize activists. Stating that this has increased the risk of weakening the morale of civil society, the government has been urged to keep the morale of organizations high and ensure a fearless environment.
The memorandum signed by Federation Secretary Sunita Gaire and President Shivraj Pathak states that in accordance with the demands raised by the youth movement, a solid foundation should be laid for controlling corruption, establishing good governance and ending the unrest, and a positive message should be conveyed to the people.
