The data released by the Health Office, Baitadi, on the occasion of World AIDS Day has shocked many. At an interaction program organized at the district headquarters on Monday, the data revealed that 136 people are infected with HIV in Baitadi alone.
According to Khagendra Karki, statistics officer of the Health Office Baitadi, out of 136 infected people, 74 are women and 62 are men. He said that due to discrimination against HIV infected people, those infected are still unable to come out openly.
The highest number of infected people in the district is 28 in Dasharathchand Municipality, 25 in Patan Municipality, 16 in Melauli Municipality, 14 in Pancheshwor Rural Municipality, 18 in Dogadakedar Rural Municipality, 10 each in Dilashaini Rural Municipality and Surnaya Rural Municipality. Similarly, 6 people in Shivnath Rural Municipality, 4 in Purchaundi Municipality and 4 each in Sigas Rural Municipality are infected, according to the Health Office Baitadi.
21 infected people from Baitadi have been registered outside the district. Tirtharaj Bhatta, head of the Health Office Baitadi, said that they are unable to come out openly due to poor understanding of HIV/AIDS and mistreatment of infected people. In the
program, the infected people complained that they were being discriminated against in various ways and that they were also having problems earning a living.
