Dadeldhura Prison, which has a capacity of 125, currently houses 132 prisoners. Of the prisoners in the prison, 10 are women and 122 are men. The overcrowding situation is increasing management and security challenges.

But instead of organizing the prisoners here, 14 prisoners have been transferred. According to Jailer Santosh Bhatta of Dadeldhura Prison Office, 14 prisoners have recently been transferred from Baitadi Prison to Dadeldhura.

Baitadi Prison is in a dilapidated and extremely dangerous condition, so the prisoners have been temporarily transferred to build a new building, said Dhara Bhandari, Chief of Prison Office, Baitadi.

According to her, the prisoners have been transferred to different districts because it is necessary to demolish the old structure and keep them in a safe place to build a new building. Despite the increasing number of prisoners in Dadeldhura Prison, the administration has said that some improvements have been made to the physical infrastructure. Jailer Bhatta informed that there are 16 toilets inside the prison and that drinking water is also being managed regularly. He said that efforts are being made to provide basic necessities despite the increase in crowd.

Earlier, on the morning of Bhadra 24, security in the prison was seen to be weak. On that day, 85 prisoners escaped at once. According to the prison administration, the police have arrested 80 of the escapees. However, five more are absconding and the police are continuing their search for them, informed Bhatta.

Security arrangements at the prison have been tightened after the escape incident and necessary steps will be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring, prison sources said.
