Recently, there has been an increase in blatant violation of traffic rules in Dadeldhura. Vehicles are being driven without following safety standards, from local roads to highways.
Activities such as riding three-person motorcycles, riding without helmets, and overloading jeeps and other small vehicles are on the rise. Despite the repetition of such activities, locals have been accusing the traffic police of not taking effective action.
Checks and inspections at the important traffic post located at Syaule Chowk along the Bhimdatta Highway connecting the seven hilly districts of the Far West are also seen to be weak. Although there is a rule that vehicles should be 'entered' at this check post, recently the traffic police have been negligent in entering vehicles.
After the 'time-card' system that was in place for speed control until some time ago was also removed, surveillance has become even weaker. The lack of checks and inspections has increased the risk of road accidents.
According to Bhaskar Chand, Information Officer and Police Inspector of the District Police Office, Dadeldhura, the 'Refresh Center' in Syaule has been managed as a rest area for long-distance night vehicles. However, due to the lack of adequate drinking water and food service facilities, most drivers and passengers continue without stopping the vehicle. Despite the repeated opening/operation of the 'Refresh Center' in Syaule, it has not been organized.
Deputy Inspector of Police Shyamraj Bohara, Chief of the District Traffic Police Office, claims that they check vehicles on the highway daily. However, there has been criticism of the working style of not taking traffic action against local drivers and only making them pay fines in the name of highway checking. The traffic system has been seen to be weak after the recent Genji movement. However, there was no damage to the police units during the Genji movement here.
20 accidents, 7 deaths in four months
In the first four months of the current fiscal year, 20 vehicle accidents have occurred in Dadeldhura. Seven people have died in the accidents, 21 have been seriously injured, and 24 have been slightly injured. The traffic police has stated that a revenue of Rs 442,000 has been collected from driving without a driver's license, carrying more passengers than their capacity, and violating other rules.
