A team of the High-Level Inquiry Commission, formed to investigate the incidents that took place during the Bhadra 23 movement and the 24th demonstration, has monitored houses that were set on fire and vandalized in Kanchanpur.
The team visited government offices and private homes on Thursday to gather information about the situation.
The team led by Commission member Bisheshwor Prasad Bhandari directly monitored the arson and vandalism that took place in Krishnapur Municipality and the houses of the then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, former Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim Rajendra Singh Rawal, and others. 'If you look at the arson and vandalism, they are all of the same nature, and if you look at the videos and photos from that time, the trend is also consistent,' said Commission member Bhandari, speaking at an interaction organized after the monitoring. 'We are currently monitoring in a representative manner across the country.'
Member Bhandari said that there has been a strong demand for action against those involved in vandalism and arson. "There is a concern that impunity will be encouraged among the victims, but that is not the case. We also recommend the government in the same way," he said. "If impunity is encouraged, the state and society can deteriorate. Everyone has come to the conclusion that this should be addressed in a timely manner."
The team reached Kanchanpur after completing its monitoring in Surkhet, the capital of Karnali province. The team has also scheduled a monitoring program in Kailali on Friday.
Most of the participants in the interaction raised issues such as taking action against those involved in vandalism and arson, compensation, etc. The participants complained that it was even a problem for children to live in after burning down the houses of innocent people. "I took a loan from the bank and started a hosiery business. Everything from the machine to the clothes was burned. Now how will I repay the bank loan and what will I do to make a living?" said Dhansingh Pujara, the owner of Melauli Hosiery Industry. "What was my fault for starting a business by mortgaging the land?" He has also demanded action against those involved in the arson and appropriate compensation. Before the interaction began, former Chief Minister and UML Sudurpaschim Province Parliamentary Party leader Rajendra Singh Rawal had misbehaved with the commission team during the discussion, saying that they were going from district to district in the name of investigation, harassing employees and collecting allowances.
