Dadeldhura Public Library, located in the Dadeldhura district headquarters, has been losing its appeal to readers with the development of technology in recent times. Due to the easy access to mobile and digital materials, the number of readers visiting the library has been decreasing. However, with the aim of preserving the reading culture and reactivating the library, the library has been giving priority to various programs and activities.
Dadeldhura Public Library was established in 2061 BS. Library Chairman Gajendra Bahadur Shahi said that the library was started with the aim of providing facilities to students who wanted to study at that time. According to him, the library was established with the aim of developing the habit of reading among the citizens of this place.
Chairman Shahi said that the library has prepared an annual action plan with the aim of holding at least one program every month. According to him, a plan has been put forward to conduct sports programs like volleyball and cricket and educational activities to increase attraction towards the library. But there are no monthly programs as stated by the library.
Chairman Shahi also said that the library is active in promoting Doteli literature and has been honoring writers who publish books in Doteli literature. Chairman Shahi said that various school-level programs, recognition of writers and literary seminars are being held here to develop a reading culture.
Dadeldhura Public Library is developing not only as a place for books but also as a place for preserving historical materials. According to Chairman Shahi, another objective of establishing the library is to preserve and preserve the materials used by our ancestors since the old Doteli kingdom.
Dadeldhura Public Library has its own building. Two employees are working in the office. Some shutters of the building have been rented out for commercial purposes. The remaining rooms are used for the library, Doteli Museum, meeting hall, office, etc.
According to Pushkar Deuba, head of the library office, only a limited number of readers who are preparing for competitive exams including the Public Service Commission and the Teachers Service Commission are currently returning to the library. He says that the small market and the low number of readers are also one of the reasons for the low readership. ‘A decade ago, 15 to 20 readers used to come to the library daily, but now only two or three are seen every day,’ he said, ‘The excessive use of smartphones and social media seems to have reduced the interest of readers.’
Currently, the library has more than 10,000 books including religious, literary, legal, English literature, public service preparation, and teacher service preparation materials. Similarly, the library has made arrangements to study more than three lakh digital books through its own internet system ‘library protocol’.
Studying is completely free for readers who come to the library. In addition, there is an arrangement to take the book they like home and study it, but they have to return it within a certain period. Office Chief Deuba said that new books worth two and a half lakh rupees were added to the library last year alone. He informed that work is currently underway to bring new books to the library with the help of donors.
According to Office Chief Deuba, the annual income from rent is up to eight lakh rupees. The amount is spent on library staff salaries, program operations, electricity, cleaning, and other activities.
Dadeldhura Public Library has continued its efforts to revive the reading culture despite limited resources and declining readership. However, the growing influence of digital media, the small size of the market, and the decline in youth interest are challenging the organization's objectives.
In such a situation, if the local government, schools, parents, and community help restore the importance of the library, it seems that Dadeldhura Public Library can become vibrant again.
