Fear of flood in Patera Khalla

What you should know

Chakra Bahadur Shahi of Dodhara Chandni Municipality-3, Patera Khalla, is remembered as the flood of last year as soon as the water level rises in the Jogbuda river. He is worried that the floods of Jogbuda will enter the slum again. He lives in the river bank and has been worried since the onset of monsoon.

The settlement was completely displaced when the Jogbuda river flooded last year. At that time, the displaced stayed in the school for 10 days. The flood did not only inundate the settlement. All the crops were wiped out, the grain inside was also washed away. Cows, buffaloes and goats also ran away. Many houses were also destroyed.

"The rice field outside was completely destroyed by the flood, the rice and wheat in the beggar inside got wet and spoiled," said Shahi, "the crude house was also destroyed, goats and cows also died." He had 40 goats. 8 quintals of paddy and 5 quintals of wheat were all wet and rotten. After that, Shahi says that he had to buy and eat.

Due to the Shahi flood that reached here a decade ago after being displaced by a landslide from Tilagufa municipality in Calikot, Barseni is in a state of panic. "Landslides caused grief in the mountains, floods in the plains," he said, "only sorrow for the poor wherever they go." But that is not enough, said Aiti Damai, a local of Patera Khalla. She said, "Last year, we saved lives, all crops and crops were washed away. Even now, sometimes the fields come up and the whole settlement is flooded."

There are more than 40 families living in Patera Khalla. When the flood hits the slum, everyone takes shelter in the nearby school. Some go to the houses of relatives and neighbors. Last year, 40 families stayed in the school for two weeks after the flood that came in the third week of June last year with heavy rains hit the settlement. The ward office and various organizations helped them with food.

"Until a concrete embankment is built on the river bank, there is no way to be sure," Indra Bahadur Damai said, "Many people have now built concrete houses after the mud houses were destroyed by the floods."

Patera Khalla is an area that always gets flooded during monsoons. There was no settlement here in the past. After the squatters suddenly built a camp, a large settlement has been formed here. But the local people have not been able to live with confidence because there is always flooding during the rainy season. They say that they can be sure only after the concrete embankment is built on the banks of Jogbuda river.
