After the completion of the tree felling work, the construction of a dry port at Dodhara Chandni across the Mahakali will begin soon.
With the completion of tree felling work in Gauri Shankar Community Forest of Shuklaphanta National Park, the way to proceed with the construction process has been opened . The cutting of 1,593 trees in Gourishankar Community Forest in Dodhara Chandni Municipality-1, which is connected to the border with India, has been completed. Initially, 1,702 trees in the area of 41 hectares of community forest had to be cut, but after 109 trees were stolen, the number of trees to be cut has decreased. As the wood can also be stolen, the cut wood has been piled up at Piparaiya post of the park.
"Now that the tree-cutting work is over, the field has been cleared, the construction process will start soon," said Ashish Gajurel, Executive Director of the Intermodal Transport Development Committee, "In a way, the work has already started, the work will start formally after the foundation stone is jointly laid by the Prime Ministers of the two countries." According to Gajurel, although the work of cutting trees has been completed, the committee has already informed the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply through correspondence. Now the correspondence with India will be through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After that, he said, the construction process will proceed jointly from foundation laying. India has signed a contract with a construction company for 3.8 billion Nepalese rupees for the construction of a dry port. Gajurel said that the goal is to be able to work within the next three years.
It is almost two decades since the discussion of the construction of a dry port in Dodhara Chandni started. In the meantime, there have been many studies and monitoring. Locals are happy as the construction of the dry port will go ahead even though it is delayed. After the construction of the dry port, it is expected that trade with India will increase through this port. As an infrastructure of the dry port, an 8 km 6 lane access road has been constructed from Gaddachouki, the last point of East-West Highway to Dodhara Chandni Municipality-1 Malaria Nala, along with a four-lane concrete bridge over the Mahakali river. Part of the access road remains to be paved.
Road construction work is going on from Jogbuda bridge to Akashe bridge on the national highway. Along with the construction of the dry port, the construction of the access road is also expected to be completed.
According to the DPR constructed by India, administrative buildings, warehouses, kitchens, security and quarantine houses and load/unload sheds will be constructed for the dry port. Also, a wall will be built on all sides. Although Nepal has demanded to increase the warehouse and parking area, the work will be done immediately according to the DPR prepared by India. After the construction of the dry port has started, the Intermodal Transport Development Committee has also prepared to send staff to the construction site. Executive Director Gajurel said that the office will be established and staff will be appointed.
